The new Mövenpick Hotel is designed by the dutch architects Claus & Kaan in their typical sober, minimalistic style that can also be admired elsewhere in the Eastern Docklands. The hotel is situated virtually next to the Central Station, offers panoramic views over the IJ, the north bank, the Eastern Docklands and the old city center. The building is well integrated with its environment. Via a landing it has direct access to its neighbours, music halls Muziekgebouw and Bimhuis, and on the other side it can even share congress room with the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) by opening connecting doors.
With its four stars the Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam aims first of all at the business market of congress participants and business people. It also expects many passengers of cruiseships that arrive or depart here. But with such a location, 'café' (pub), restaurant and roof terrace next to the water, no doubt it will attract locals from Amsterdam as well.
Besides the public space the head of the Handelskade is now finished. Only a small canal and the continuous quays along the IJ to the Eastern Docklands are still awaiting completion. And further down, the gap between the Europa complex and the PTA has to be developed and pakhuis Africa is being renovated.
